Description

I wanted to draw history about the young wood fairy Elanie.
She lives in the mystical world of imaginations and dreams.
I tried to show beauty of autumn forest and sensation of lightness.
I used Paintre 7 and Photoshop CS.
I`d like critique on my work.
Comments are most welcome!
Thanks!:)

Yeah,I noticed this on cgtalk.Everything is wonderfully detailed and there's some great textures. My one gripe is that it looks like she has a left foot on a right leg....maybe I'm seeing it wrong, good work though.

 02/02/05 @980

This is really beautiful!! The tiny details, the folds and texture on her clothes...just wow.

I only have one complaint about the flowers on the bottom right--they seem a bit too sharp and sort of distracts me from the girl. But otherwise, it is really lovely. Keep up the good work :).

I'd really like to see a huge version.
This background is so damn detailed that it looks like a photo o_O

It also looks a bit puzzeled. Like background and foreground are two different subjects.

Oh, thank you very much for your opinion, critique and attention!

Under the laws of perspective - if girl has deviated back and has waved a leg - her leg will be nearer to the spectator.
Therefore it seems slightly big.
Try to make it yourself before a mirror - and you convinced!
I drew a figure of the girl from a nature, but the dress and the forest I have thought up then Border of roses and grasses in the original size ( 34*34 sm) is more soft.
Here I do a little sharpness for gallery image for contours because I wanted to do details not degraded.

Sorry for my bad english:)

Wow. On the close ups many things looks different than expected. For instance I didn't know that her mouth is open. Sadly you cut out the eyes :(

Really, really gorgeous work. ;) The details and particulary the atmosphere is what i prefer the most. ;Though i must admit that the foot pointing up seems a bit akward tu me, like if it is a left foot instead of a right foot but oh well, it is a very minor detail. :) +max score from me. ;)

This is a breathtaking, beautiful image, but it really bothers me how everything doesn't fit together. 1) The flowers and bush in the foreground, 2) the woman and the swing, 3) the big tree (on which the swing is tied to), 4) the forest in the back, AND 5) the ground... These five things look like they belong to five different pictures. I hope you will address this issue on your next piece :)

Such lovely work! The dress fabric is simply amazing and the face is so pretty too! I love the background as well!..Hell I love everything hehe!
As some people mentioned before, I think theres something wrong with the foot... maybe it's about the fingers? hehe can't name it. Doesn't matter much anyway! It's al ovely piece altogetehr, I'm sooo impressed! I am staring at it fora few minutes now and still find some detail which I haven't noticed before! Max points!

Avatar Sulariade

 02/04/05 @027

Beautiful details, especially the flowers and the fabic. I think if it is her left leg that is showing it looks pushed too far over to the right side of her body. Also the folds of the pink part of the dress skirt gives the impression that there is a leg folded underneath that - which would be her left leg as she sees it.

Gorgeous work, though. I can't wait to see more from you.

I think this is a lovely painting.

There is something wrong with the foot, The toes indicate that it is the wrong foot for that leg. That foot doesn''t make sense because of the position of the knees. Her legs don't looked cross so the big toe should be on the otherside.

Avatar zzzak

 02/07/05 @864

Lovely painting!,,, I love this type of work.
@Poshspice - funny you mention "The Swing" by Fragonard - I was thinking the same thing. It's also funny that we see so many crits on the foot being off here - there was also the same talk over the female's legs/feet not fitting right in "The Swing."
...Maybe these large frilly dresses covering up much of the top of the legs will cause akwardness no matter what(?)... either way, great work!

Avatar Katarina

 02/07/05 @899

Thank you once more :)
I have seen "The Swing" by Fragonard for the first time today, thanks to your comments.
I was not inspired by this picture - I don`t think, that my work is similar to Fragonard`s picture.
There are completely different forests, an atmosphere, different epoch and the mood of the works :)
Thank you for the comparison with Linda Bergkwist, it`s very flattering for me, but I think we have absolutely different styles :)

It's very beautiful! The only thing I see as being odd, is the foot... I can't really tell how the legs might be crossing over the other, so I agree with some of the other members observations that the foot should be symmetrically opposite to its current situation. It also looks just a little too big. Those were the only unusual things I could find. Other than those, it is very beautiful! Keep up the great painting! (thumbup)

Avatar nomaD42

 02/08/05 @250

Truly lovely artwork. There is a wonderful feel of depth and volume to this piece. I absolutely adore the way you handled the light filtering through the forest canopy and down into the background.
I do have to agree with the above comments about the quality of lighting on the woman, it appears too harsh and cold (flash-like) compared to the beautiful soft and diffuse lighting that you have throughout the remainder of the painting. The crispness of the flowers in the foreground are not so distracting to me, the do a good job of framing the image. It would be far worse to have it blurred out of focus, or worse, yet, just have some blurry forground dirt and leaves. Ugghh! Thank you for doing it the way you did.
I am trying to make some sense of the foot issue. I think I can see where the intention is for the left foot, and it would work better if not for the crease in the fabric, looking as though there is a leg there, and the crease between two knees. If the crease were painted to appear as one knee and forming a ridge line along the leg, then it would work much better as being the left leg. Either that or you could just reverse the foot and make the world happier. :)
This piece is a dream to look at, and wonderfully executed. I am jealous.

When I first saw this at CGTalk I was totally in awe - now after looking at your website I am also wondering if you worked in some pictures. I know you did show some close up but I am still unsure.

For once the style doesn't fit your other works displayed in the computer graphic section on your site and your photography is absolutely beautiful and some pictures you have listed there look like paintings with some kind of filter and things.

Also some of the branches on top of the picture look so strange - like erased out.

I think it is still a very beautiful composition - I would just love to be fully convinced it is 100% painted.

Hello Elain Very NIce colors and composition.

That is so, so stunning. Every bit of it is my favorite, but especially the swing. The roses are lovely. I wish I was there.

This is a beautiful image, even with the anatomical error. The right foot having the big toe on the wrong side. It is not the left foot peeping out as the left knee is clearly delineated and the rest of the left leg is pointing down, as per the fall of the wonderfully detailed and exquisite dress.
My only other gripe with this wonderland pastiche is that there is no evident energy to the movement of the swing. Although, movement is clearly depicted, there is no sense of energy to it. The three-D effect is excellent!

Want to know something? She's BEAUTIFUL. Her dress is gorgeous, I love the lighting, the shadow in the trees is perfect, though it makes me wonder where her illuminating light source is coming from... Still gorgeous. LoveLoveLove.

Beautiful detail work on the forest glad, the foot however looks awkward and unusually thick. Perspective or no, it strikes a sour note in an otherwise enchanting picture. The clothes and fabrics are awesome!

I found this picture on the net, I think it's very similar to your piece...well, is quite the same scene. Have you used it as a reference?
I think that the background in your pic is veery well done, I like it. Her head seems to be a bit big, and I find something wrong with the foot. I like the mood :)

Truly beautiful piece.. tho i have serious doubts that you are beeing completely honest about not using Fragonards "the swing" as a reference.. I would even like to claim that you have made a partial "paintover".

I have taken the liberty to mirror Fragonards piece agains yours so that the identical symmetry will be more obvious.

Proof?

The tree has identical shapes with a few twigs added and the swing has been moved a bit closer to the trunk. I think the foreground is painted and the girl has been given a new dress. Also shoulder area looks very much like a paintover.
I'm even gonna be so bold as to say that the background is probably an altered photo seeing how you have used Fragonards piece you probably wouldn't think twice about doing something simular with the background.

I truly hope that im wrong about this but the proof seems to overwhelming to ignore.

*Quote* slickgreekgeo: "I think it looks quite different from the reference."
Have a closer look :)

*Quote* Katarina: "Thank you once more
I have seen "The Swing" by Fragonard for the first time today, thanks to your comments.
I was not inspired by this picture - I don`t think, that my work is similar to Fragonard`s picture.
There are completely different forests, an atmosphere, different epoch and the mood of the works"
